(contenu en anglais)The PRS Custom 24 is the flagship of the regular PRS line. This is pretty much a custom guitar you can go out and buy in most guitar shops. PRS is a smart company in that they do not sit on a successful model without ever trying to improve it they constantly strive to make it better and better. This is the new PRS Custom 24 model. You can get it in a variety of finishes and you can also pick the one of the two PRS neck shapes. They use to be called Wide-Fat and Wide-Thin but they are now called Pattern Regular and Pattern Thin respectively. This example had the thinner neck. The guitar has a mahogany body and a mahogany neck. The neck has an Indian rosewood fretboard with ivory bird inlays. Up top you get a set of the PRS winged locking tuners. The bridge is the PRS Fender style Tremolo. I would prefer a hardtail version but they do not make many hardtail Custom 24's. This example had the stock 59/09 pickups still in it. The control layout has pretty unique placement with a volume and tone with a 5 way blade switch that splits coils. The blade switch replaces the old rotary switch that use to come on these models.
UTILIZATION
PRS is like the Apple computers of the guitar world. They are always looking to improve their models and they dont really care if you have grown attached to a certain feature. If the feature can be improve they are going to improve it. They do not sit on a model for 20 years while the rest of the world moves on around it. The tuners on these guitars are some futuristic locking tuners that PRS has come up with. They do the job and also prevent the string from slipping on the peg which some tuners do not prevent. The pattern thin neck is nice and thin. It is wide as well so it has the old super strat feel to it. The pattern regular neck isnt that fat itself but it has more of a traditional Gibson 50s feel to it while this is more 60s. The tremolo unit even if it looks like something off a 50s Fender it is a really modern design and holds tuning well. It is very stable so you can do double stops on it without going out of tune, something you cannot do on a lot of tremolos.
SOUNDS
The 59/09 pickups in this guitar are PRS's take on the old school PAF design. They have a bit more of a modern feel to them and PRS's guitars are modern overall so the feeling fits. Both of the pickups are very smooth. Usually just the neck pickup has a smooth tone to it but on this guitar both pickups have a very smooth classy feeling to it. The switching on this guitar is slightly different. Position 1 gives you the bridge humbucker like you expect. Position 2 gives you the bridge humbucker with a single coil split tone from the neck. The middle position gives you both the neck and the bridge in humbucker and position 4 gives both pickups in single coil mode. The last position gives you the full on neck position sound.
OVERALL OPINION
If you own a PRS Custom 24 it is most likely the flagship of your collection. These guitars are works of art as much as they are instruments. The craftmanship on these guitars is amazing to behold. You havent seen a flamed top until you see a PRS 10 top. The quality on these guitars rivals something you would get out of a custom shop. PRS being on the market and growing in popularity has made other companies advance their designs and overall game in the guitar industry. They have built high quality guitars and have really been the first company to expand an in house boutique quality guitar and delivery it to the masses. These guitars are some of the most beautifully constructed guitars in the world. The have unique and colorful patterns in the wood and many burst options that just compliment the beauty of the exotic woods.
PRS also has its won guitar body style that has made them easily identified. They have a mix between a Fender Stratocaster and Ibanez/ Les Paul SG all in one to make their own unique looking shaped guitars.

SOUNDS
One of my on going beefs with PRS guitars are they are very hit or miss. I have played too many of their guitars to count and many of them have been great and many of them have been very poor.
This guitar has a great tone and I have always felt that with every PRS guitars that I have played. They don't have the soul of a Gibson Les Paul but the tone is very good for a do all kind of guitar.
I have seen country players play a PRS and I have seen metal guys play them. So the tone has been able to shift throughout musical genres. The pickups are great as well. They are not super high gain but not a vintage humbucker either. They fit in the middle nicely which enables them to blend between music styles.
OVERALL OPINION
At new these guitars come in at around $2600. Not a bad price for a PRS but certainly not a cheap price either. If you like the smokeburst look which I am not really a fan of then you will probably look past anything negative about this guitar. Les plaques masquant les ressorts du vibrato et l'électronique sont en plastique moche. Dommage !
[7] Une belle guitare qui se démarque d'une guitare standard par son design caractéristique et sa finition. Dommage que les bois ne soient pas un peu plus beaux (attention toutefois ils sont déjà beaux), car pour CHF 5'290.00 ce serait quand-même sympa.
Complément du 28.7.08 : Après l'essai de diverses prs custom 22 et 24, c'est la seule prs qui avait des bois de tables aussi moche.
UTILISATION
La guitare est, à ma grande surprise, composé d'un bois de très grande densité. Je l'ai empoignée juste après une gibson LesPaul Custom et la différence de poids n'est pas évidente. La prs SEMBLE légère, mais elle ne l'est pas. Une sorte de ballerine de combat. Méfiance donc.
Le confort est toutefois au rendez-vous et le manche, un très bon manche d'ailleurs, se glisse parfaitement entre vos doigts. Il donne une impression de solidité rassurante et autorise de multiples styles de jeux et une grande vitesse. Les vernis glissent bien sur cet instrument, mais comme pour la LesPaul, je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de transpirer sur cette dernière.
Notons que l'accès aux aigus pourrait être meilleur si prs n'avait pas construit un talon un peu XL, même si ce dernier reste excellent.
Comme énoncé plus haut, un seul potentiomètre de tonalité et de volume c'est un peu short. Mais on s'en sort grâce au sélecteur 5 positions très efficace.
[8] Ne nous laissons pas tromper, la prs est très arrangeante pour un usage intensif. Un bon outil de travail.
SONORITÉS
Actionner cette guitare à vide est une surprise en soit. J'obtiens des sons d'une puissance et d'une régularité remarquable. Le spectre est très équilibré et le grain et la profondeur sont louables.
En clean la guitare délivre tout un tas de sonorités chaudes et rondes avec un beau claquant sur l'attaque et de l'air à revendre (entendez par là un clean aérien et chaud). Ils sont certes un peu moins magnifiques que ce que les prs dragonII peuvent offrir, mais on est toujours dans la magnificence.
En crunch comme en saturé, la guitare excelle. Le son peux prendre un peu toutes les dénominations de ce qui doit être un son crunch et saturé pour nous donner le meilleur de ses boiseries. Palme d'or dans la saturation ou le son, moderne, reste défini avec une puissance et une attaque phénoménale.
[10] on va pas tortiller du cul pour ch... droit, cette guitare est de la balle en bloc dans le domaine. Si vous faites de la musique moderne, vous risquez d'aimer cette guitare qui possède vraiment un son infernal.
AVIS GLOBAL
Comment dire, si cette guitare n'était pas aussi chère, elle serait absolument parfaite. En effet, faire payer un client ce prix pour de la gratte de série. C'est un peu tous nous prendre pour des ânes à foin.
Elle doit également se battre contre nombre de concurrentes sérieuses dans son sègment, depuis les dean hardtail usa, en passant par les Xavier Petit Rievax et autres Warrior soldier de meilleure qualité encore. Notons aussi l'appartition récemment, de Fame avec ses Forums réalisées en custom shop et qui sont des copies presque conformes aux prs. Mais elle constitue une valeur sûre, même si sa côte ne devrait pas augmenter avec le temps (problème de vernis qui déteint sur certains modèles).
Le bois n'est pas de provenance prestigieuse mais ça ne se remarque pas à l'oreille. Si vous pouvez, privilégiez des modèles d'avant 1989. C'était les très bons millésines de prs.
