    La tête décent

    Peavey Vypyr Tube 120 HeadPublié le 19/05/11 à 02:18

If you are buying the head version of this amp then you are probably going to go gigging with this amp. Let me save you some grief buy saying you might get laughed off the stage with this amp. I would suggest getting a used Peavey 5150 around the same price and be done with it. There you will keep some of your dignity. If you aren't gigging with this and you already have a 4x12, 2x12, or 1x12 cabinet then playing and practicing at home will be fine with this amp.

    SOUNDS

This is an all encompassing amp that you only need a guitar and cable and you are set. It is a nice amp for those starting out playing on the the electric guitar and mom or dad don't want to shell out too much money just yet.

Compared to the solid state Vypyr series this amp has a lot more dynamic range and punch to the tone. Not a bad or good thing just a personal taste thing. The tone has more girth and tube feel obviously with the added power tubes.

I like this amp with a humbucking pickup style guitar. Since this amp is sort of modeled after some of Peavey's more high gain amps it is only fitting to play it with a guitar that can cut some of the hum and noise out. Plus the increase of gain with the humbuckers is essential when playing in the high gain modes of this amp.

    OVERALL OPINION

At new these amps come in at around $600, which is a steal if you ask me. For what you get and the options to explore this amp is just killer for the price. You will need a cab of some sort so don't think you are done with this amp. Most people know this but just to let some people know. You couldn't find a better sounding amp or something even close to the price of this amp with all of the features that it has. Peavey are masters at keeping decent enough tone in a rather nice price point.

I highly recommend this amp to anyone thinking of getting a practice amp and doesn't want to shell out a ton of money to get one. If you are thinking of gigging with it then maybe try a used 5150 or a used 6505. I think anyone worth their salt will know this but you never know. If your playing at church then who cares but I wouldn't recommend going into a club or bar with this amp.

    Modèle d'ampli, mais mieux

    Peavey Vypyr Tube 120 HeadPublié le 14/07/11 à 01:05

This is one of the amp modelers that has found its way onto the market. Amp modelers in general in my opinion sound horrid. I hate the process tone and characteristics in these amps. However, the Vypyre series from Peavey has done a great job at making them more tolerable to listen to.

The problem I see with this is you have to spend extra money to get a speaker cabinet to go along with this amp. Which means you are going to play an amp like this out in public. That is where I draw the line on these things. If you are going to practice at home or take a shot at playing the guitar you don't have to spend a whole lot of money, so a nice little combo amp will do the trick. But this things invites the idea of playing on stage somewhere.

    SOUNDS

The sound of this amp isn't bad for a modeler. It is still going to be processed and only mimic the amps that is is trying to model but it is a good amp for practice at least. I like high gain amps and since most amp modelers have a tone of clean amps but not usable distortion tones, but this amp does have a great amp distortion. If you are a fan of high gains and need an all in one amp with effects and settings than this is the amp for you.

The clean is just as good as a Fender or Roland clean, but the distortion amps is where this thing lives. another cool thing is that this thing has stompbox models as well not just amps. So there are really more options available here than any other amp modeler that i have seen.

    OVERALL OPINION

If you need a solid amp modeling amp that is cheap and compact then this is the best amp for you. At new they come in at around $699, which is a bit more than I would ever spend on an amp modeling amp.

I wouldn't recommend this amp to anyone. I love Peavey but spending this kind of money on an amp modeler is just plain foolish. I would get a used 5150 or 650 for the price of this thing.
