The Alto Alpha Comp is a digital single channel compressor that models its sound after a wide array of different classic sounds. It has 1/4 inch inputs and outputs in the back and is not a rackable unit as it has a unit shape.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the Alto Alpha Comp isn't all that complicated but still provides enough control over your tone to get a wide array of different compression sounds. The unit has knobs for input and output level, as well as one to choose the mode and the variations. There are 16 different modes and variations, making this compressor capable of getting a number of different sounds. The unit also has power and bypass buttons. Everything on this unit is laid out smartly and is easy to access. I don't have the manual for the Alto Alpha Comp but I can see how it might come in handy so you know exactly what all of the modes are variations are capable of.
SOUND QUALITY
The tone quality of the Alto Alpha Comp is overall pretty great, although some modes are better than others. This is an extremely versatile compressor because of all of the modes and variations and all of them are pretty different sounding for the most part. Because of this versatility I have used this compressor for a number of different applications including for lead vocals, electric guitar, snare drum, kick drum, and bass guitar. Beyond this it can be used on pretty much anything you would want to use compression with because it has so many different possibilities.
OVERALL OPINION
I've been using the Alto Alpha Comp for about a year and it is definitley a unique type of compressor because it is a digital piece of outboard gear. Usually I like to use outboard compression because it is analog and is a nice contrast to plug-in compressors, but the Alto Alpha Comp's versatility makes it a great piece of outboard gear that can help engineers on all levels. I would definitely recommend checking out this compressor if you are looking for a versatile one to meet your needs and this is especially great for home studio owners looking to get a lot of bang for their buck.
