The Doctor will see you now.
Some of you may remember that a few years ago Brad Paisley requested we build him a custom Lo-Fi delay for a project he was working on… now, Brad absolutely loves our Faux Tape Echo but he wanted something a bit different for his album "Wheelhouse". He wanted something with a more dreamy, airy texture that fills the time and space of the song with ambient self-oscillation. Something that could create a mood and emotion for a song just with the feel of the delay line. It started life as the SkyLine prototype, then was changed to the Wheelhouse in honor of Brad's album, and is now finally released as a regular part of the line as The Doctor!
Sitting between the Ethereal Delay and Reverb in terms of tone and ambient textures, the features and ease of use of the Faux Tape Echo, The Doctor is the perfect answer to your onstage ambient desires along with basic straightforward delay needs – with a effortlessly accurate tap tempo, 4 differing sub-division options and the kind of filter across the repeats that will send your head spinning, The Doctor will be the perfect addition to your board whether you praise and worship, have a radiohead, you're comfortably numb or just want it to carry you away on an ocean of dreamy repeats.
As with all of our delay pedals, the base guitar signal is not effected in anyway. Brian splits the signal and sends one straight through, then puts the effect on the other and layers them back together before it hits the output jack. This way you know that your guitar signal will remain pure all the way through, and the delay itself just enhances your tone without taking anything away.
With The Doctor, you can count on the pedal being instantly usable the moment you plug it in. With easy to use controls to adjust the speed, feedback and tone of your repeats, you can also add realistic and random tape-like warble with the rate and depth controls, which go from subtle movement to completely intense gyrations that border on seasickness. As you play with it, you’ll notice it is the tone control that makes The Doctor so different and special. Fully CCW you just get a slight turn of the repeats, moving slightly away with perfect ambience and from there, the more you turn it up the more the trails change, they turn more, they become more swirly and less defined, with the base note tonality remaining as a constant ambient fixture, but letting the attack definition fade off and then eventually leading into perfect self oscillation. With minimal repeats, a quick delay time and the tone knob set a minimum, it creates an amazing slapback perfect for fattening up any lead or rhythm tone. Keeping the repeats down a little and the tone up about half-way, it gives off a classic analog delay vibe with more mellow and darker repeats that bubble under your notes like a sturdy foundation. Increase the delay time, tone and repeats and the self oscillations sets in just before the point of running away for some incredible lo-fi drones that set the perfect ambient, pulsating backdrop to play over. With the plethora of different options at your disposal at the quick turn of a couple of knobs, this is one of those pedals you start playing and lose track of time after getting lost in the current of great lo-fi tones and textures.
