Ibanez is now pushing a new lineup called the Premium line. It sits in between the Prestige and the regular Indonesian guitars. These models are really no different from most other Indonesian guitars, but there is a bit more care taken in certain aspects that I'll describe later. The guitar features a basswood body with a maple veneer, a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, 24 extra jumbo frets, offset dot inlays, an Ibanez floyd rose, two humbuckers, one volume, one tone and a five way switch.

UTILIZATION

I've heard quite a few horror stories with these. The guitar I had wasn't too bad, but there could have been some better things with it. The first thing you notice is the top. Don't be fooled, that's a veneer. It's just a very thin piece of pretty wood, and it does nothing for the actual tone of the guitar. The guitar will sound like any other Ibanez basswood guitar out there. The fretwork was decent on this, but it could have been a bit better. There were no issues with the truss rods or anything like that on my model, but I've heard of some bizarre issues like that on certain ones from other people.

SOUNDS

The guitar has some pretty awful pickups installed in it stock. It's the standard Ibanez affair. They put in these super cheap pickups along with cheap pots/switches. These wear out, and the pickups themselves are just there to produce sound. The bridge lacks the clarity that I look for, and the neck doesn't have the smoothness I tend to go for. I recommend replacing them with something like the Crunch Lab and LiquiFire combo. That would really make this guitar come alive.

OVERALL OPINION

The guitar looks great, but that's the main thing is has going for it. If you're into pretty guitars, this is probably right up your alley. If you're on the hunt for the magical maple/basswood combo, you'll have to look elsewhere. That top doesn't do anything in terms of tone. The guitar could use a pickup swap, but aside from that, it's a pretty solid guitar. Just be sure to play it before you buy as some have issues.
