The Yamaha UX 16 is a simple and easy MIDI interface, it will support up to 16 MIDI channels and it has a 24 inch USB cable and 50 inch MIDI cords to make sure you can reach whatever piece of gear you need it to reach. All of the power for the UX16 comes from your USB port. The price of the Yamaha UX16 is only 50 dollars and that is a great price to have this mobile MIDI interface for your set up. When I was using this on my laptop it would work great every time, but some times on my PC it wouldn’t recognize it, no matter what drivers I had or what program I was using it in. The downside of this MIDI interface is that it is hit or miss with all of your DAW’s and even your computers. You will need to carefully read the specs and determine if your system and DAW will recognize this interface.
UTILIZATION
Yamaha probably should put out multiple driver updates for this interface and they have not done that yet, there are multiple compatibility problems on different systems and with different DAW’s. All of the issues are very spontaneous and are un predictable. The last thing you want is to be out and about and want to make music and cant because your interface wont sync.
OVERALL OPINION
The price is very affordable and the cord length of the interface is very. But until Yamaha fixes the issues that they are having with the inconsistencies of this interface then I say to pass on it. It is not really worth the chance not knowing if it will ever stop working for your DAW or computer one day. There are plenty of other MIDI interfaces that are very similar to this one that work great. Check out some of the smaller MIDI devices by Behringer. They are affordable, small, and will work with all of your programs and computers.
