(contenu en anglais)The Cascade Microphones C77 is a bang for your buck ribbon microphones designed for use in the recording studio. I'd only recommend using it for recording purposes, since it is a ribbon microphone and needs to be handled with care. The mic has a figure eight polar pick up pattern like most ribbon microphones, and picks up frequencies between 30 Hz and 18 KHz. The mic has the look and feel of the classic RCA DX77 ribbon microphone, and is said to be loosely based upon it.
OVERALL OPINION
The Cascade Microphones C77 is perfect for either the home or professional studio owner who is looking for a very reasonably priced ribbon microphone without sacrificing too much quality. While of course this doesn't sound like the original DX77, it does have a more than respectable sound quality and is a mic that will come handy in a lot of different situations. The mic is great for recording vocals, electric guitars, and piano, which are just the applications that I've had a chance to use the microphone with. The mic is built pretty well, but certainly has a cheaper feel to it than the original DX77. However, I think it should last a pretty long time as long as you treat it properly. Since of course it is a true ribbon mic, it definitely has the sound to match, making it a good choice for a reliable ribbon microphone that sounds good without having to spend the big bucks on a real RCA or a Royer. Even though it is probably more suitable for a home studio owner, I wouldn't count out using this in a professional one either, as it has a great sound quality to go along with its great price. If you're looking for that ribbon sound with the hassle of maintaining a vintage one and without the large price tag, definitely investigate the C77.

Overall it's definitely not something you can use anywhere else, if you have nice gear at home it can be useful but most people don't have pre's nice enough, so most likely you should just leave it to studio owners. As a ribbon mic it can't use phantom power without getting severely destroyed, so make sure you avoid that at all costs.
This is a much cheaper ribbon mic than is typical, but I'm surprised at how nice it is considering. It has a figure-8 pickup pattern and is pretty fragile overall.
OVERALL OPINION
I really think this mic has a fantastic sound to it. It's warm and feels like ribbon, which is good. At half the price it's certainly not as nice as a vintage Reslo or a Royer ribbon microphone, but the only thing it's really lacking is some richness of tone. This doesn't mean it sounds bad, just not quite as stellar as those.
That being said, it's a great microphone for vocals and acoustic instruments like strings, acoustic guitars, banjo and mandolin. I also really like it on percussion. I tried it as a mono overhead for drums to get a great dirtier type of sound. And it sounds lovely on a piano as well. In short, it's a versatile mic if you're recording lots of different kinds of instruments, and definitely thrives with acoustic instruments.
Overall it's got a great price for a mic like this, I'd say if you are a home studio owner who's rocking good mic pre's, but not stellar ones, you'd benefit from this mic. If you're using API or NEVE pre's on a regular basis you might as well get a better ribbon mic.00- ericthegreat

The first thing I noticed was the beautiful wooden box that housed the microphone. Then, when I opened that box, there was a nice velvet-like pouch holding the microphone. While all this was a nice touch, the question still remained: how does it sound?
OVERALL OPINION
If I only choose one word to describe the C77sound, it would be "thick." The detail in the lows and low mids provides everything you need to have a sound as thick as it is clear. The proximity effect on this mic will add even more bass and still retain all the clarity. I was absolutely blown away by the sounds of this microphone. Imagine, I recorded my guitar and it sounded just the way I heard it. I never thought thick tones could come so easily. Add a standard instrument dynamic mic to bring back some more high-end, and you have instant rock guitar (thought it goes far beyond just rock). It was like I've always dreamed. I can't wait to try it on everything else I own.
In the mixing stage, the quality of this mic comes out more than you even knew it in the tracking stage. It sits in the mix better than you could ever imagine, sounds so natural, so lively, and I hardly even have to eq.
Bottom line, this mic is pure butter. It's worth every penny if you're ready to record electric guitars with very high quality. I have used it for recording strings, piano, guitar, vocals, drums, accordion, wind and brass horns, and oh, my, it has sounded incredible for every last one. Find one and buy it, its that simple. You can afford It!
