The Ampex 750 is a 1/4" reel to reel tape recorder. It's a 7" reel and has three speeds. I recently used the 750 in a unique way at a studio that I was working out. The studio doesn't use this for recording at all, but rather just for getting some tape echo. It's rather effective, but does take a bit of rigging up. Fortunately for me I didn't have to do any of that since it was already set up and good to go in the studio where I was using it. I only tried it out for getting some quick vocal slap back and printed with it. It definitely sounded like some sweet tape echo! I'm not 100% sure on the process of how to output some echo with the 750, but most reel to reels in general are able to do it if you make the right connections. Otherwise, I haven't used the 750 in any other capacity. I'm sure it's a cool little reel to reel to record on at home, or at least probably was back in the day. Now there's really now use for it in this vein unless you want to go real old school. It certainly looks cool and is a nice prop to have in a pro studio, as we all know you need them! Luckily this can still serve a nice purpose for some simple tape delay. I don't know if I'd seek out the Ampex 750, but if you come across one for cheap and are thinking about getting some real tape echo in your studio, this could be a good way to do it. That said, I wouldn't spend a ton of money on it as you can get a decent reel to reel for pretty cheap these days. Still, I'd be curious to check out some recordings on the 750.
