In keeping with my obsession with spending just about no money on anything important because that is just my nature, combined with my obsession with the company of Electro Voice, it was only a matter of time before I would come across Electro Voice's version of the cheapy budget dirt poor person microphone. The PL 24. This has just about every typically cheap quality in the specs. The frequency response only seems to begin around 80 Hz; the roll off below that is incredibly steep, but I choose to see this as a roll off rather than a limitation. The frequency response only then extends up to - actually, a quite respectable 16,000 Hz. What is nice about Electro Voice is they have made this microphone supercardioid. It seems that most of the newer microphone designs for live vocals are supercardioid now. Naturally, it is a dynamic. The microphone body itself does not feel cheap, and I actually think that this washed out gold tone to the grill is very nice and lends the microphone a very subdued, and yet at the same time bold sense of performance to whomever is using it at the current time. I do not think this microphone looks nor feels cheap at all!

    OVERALL OPINION

I have found however, that it is quintessentially a live mic. It can be tricky to use this in the studio because the proximity effect of this microphone is very very very pronounced. It can certainly be EQ'ed out, but it is just fair warning. A lot of these cheaper microphones tend to do this, but overall, this microphone has a high enough level of sensitivity to be mistaken for a much more expensive microphone. I suggest giving this mic a shot. You only have $25 to lose anyway, so why not see what this mic can do for you?
