The Gretsch G1212 Junior Jet bass guitar was made in Korea and has 19 frets and has a single humbucker pick up. It is 3/4 in size and has a volume and tone knob to control the pick up. While it is a low end model, it is made pretty well and sounds pretty good overall. While some will stray away because of the size, it has a unique quality to it because of this. Even though this bass isn't 'stacked' by any means, for beginners or someone who just likes to have a bass around (like me), this bass works great.
UTILIZATION
The neck and feel of this bass is good overall. The action sometimes tends to be a little high, but that could just be my particular bass. It is definitley a playable bass and while I have certainly played more fluid feeling basses, this is feels a lot better than some low end basses that you extremely tough to play. It is easy to access all parts of the fret board and its small size makes it really light and easy to carry around. Since it only has one pickup, the sound isn't too versatile, but the basic tone sounds good.
SOUNDS
I have used this bass mostly for rock and pop and it has definitley worked fine in both situations. It isn't the fattest bass tone I've ever heard and definitley can't come close to matching the sound of a Fender Jazz or P Bass, the overall sound is usable and sounds like a normal bass guitar. The tone is limited to the one pickup, so you don't have all the control in the world. Since I'm not a professional bass player, and just like having a bass around if I want to pick one up to play or for recording, it works for me.
OVERALL OPINION
I've had my Gretsch G1212 Junior Jet bass guitar for about five years. It has served me well and while I would love to get a Fender bass, for the price I like this bass better than the lower end Fenders. Until I can afford a bass in the next price tier this bass continues to be serviceable to me and would recommend it to anyone looking to pick up a good sounding cheap bass.
