The Audio-Techinca ATH-M40FS headphones, in a nutshell, are okay. I say this because when I tried these, I was not a big fan of them at all. However, headphones are often overlooked by beginners, and I can certainly tell you all that my experience of being underwhelmed was less off an objective assessment of the headphones, but more of my being accustomed to a certain standard of headphones. I'm certainly not a top-end headphone person at all, but I do use very nice pairs. I own a pair of Sony MDR7506's, a very well respected pair of headphones.

When I tell you never to mix on the Audio-Technica ATH-M40FS's, it's less of a general "never mix on headphones" ordeal and more of a "since you mix on headphones, these aren't close to the best" kind of deal. I say this because the Audio-Technica ATH-M40FS's are very nice headphones in their own right, and if I owned a pair myself, it would be great to have another sonic character of headphones to reference with and A/B with.

Oddly enough, the general consensus is that these headphones are spectacularly comfortable. I found the opposite. Because I use higher-quality headphones for monitoring and mixing, if I were to own any ATH-M40FS's, it would be for use with performers while they are recording. When I tried them on, standing up, singing into a microphone, they seemed to move around my head a bit too much for my own taste. When I sat down and wore them, I understood what people meant. But when I was tracking, I was just afraid they were going to fly off my head. I wasn't even moving around that much.

However, they sound pretty good considering their price nowadays. I would personally shell out just a bit more for Sony MDR7506's, but I think these can hold their own to them if you know what they're good at.
