The PreSonus CL44 is a four channel compressor/limiter that contains an external side chain. It is a digital unit and has both XLR and 1/4 inch connections. It is a rack mountable unit and will only take up a single rack space.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the PreSonus CL44 is really easy to follow and understand. Each channel has a slew of parameters that include lo filter, threshold, ratio, gain, attack, and compander. These parameters, in addition to a few others on the unit make the PreSonus CL44 a versatile compressor/limiter. Everything is laid out smartly and easy to access and the metering that is available definitely comes in handy. I don't have a manual for the PreSonus CL44, but it is easy to use and you don't really need the manual if you don't have one.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound quality of the PreSonus CL44 is good, but is nothing that will really blow you away. It is nice to have four good sounding compressors in one, and is really perfect for tracking drums if you like to track drums with compression. I have also used it on electric guitar and bass guitar with good results. These aren't the warmest sounding compressors in the world, but the PreSonus CL44 does sound good and is definitely usable.
OVERALL OPINION
I've been using the PreSonus CL44 compressor/limiter for about six months and I've found that it is a nice compressor for the price. It sounds good on a number of different instruments and is definitely useful across the board. The price is really cheap, especially when you consider you are getting four compressors for the price. PreSonus doesn't always make the most reliable gear, but this unit is definitely a well made unit that is perfect for the home studio owner looking to get a few compressors for a cheap price.
