Since I used the Spectrasonics Omnisphere at a studio that is not my own, I didn't have anything to do with the process of installing it. I will say that I don't believe there were any compatibility problems or any other issues that I know about. I did find the interface of the software to be pretty user friendly, although there is certainly a ton that you can do with the synth and a lot that I haven't began to dive into. The basic sections of the synth include those for modulation, oscillator, filters, LFO, and envelopes, which are pretty standard as far as synths go. However, Omnispehere goes beyond just these features, offering up advanced control settings and parameters within these different sections. The presets are awesome, with a lot of control over them as well. If you're familiar with the make up of virtual and hardware synthesizer, you'll be able to catch on quickly here, but if not I'd recommend having the manual around to give you some clarity.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
I can't say that I've ever had an issue related to performance with the Spectrasonics Omnisphere. However, I should note that I have run this on a Pro Tools HD system, but haven't used it in Pro Tools iteself. Rather I used it in both Apple Logic and as a stand alone. I controlled the virtual synth with an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 MIDI controller. It is hard for me to say how well this would run in another system, so I'd recommend that those interested try out the demo to see how well it would run on your system.
OVERALL OPINION
Overall, the Spectrasonics Omnisphere is an extremely powerful piece of software. It has an almost endless amount of possible sounds, with a ton of control over all the presets as well. This wouldn't be my number one choice for a virtual synthesizer, but it is definitely up there with the best of them that I have used because of its vast array of high quality sounds. The synth will cost you about $500 USD, which isn't cheap but also isn't too expensive when compared to some of the other synths out there. I'd encourage that those interested check out Spectrasonics Omnisphere as well as a number of other virtual synthesizers in this price range to help you gauge what will work best for you and what you're trying to do...
