Sujet de la discussion Splawn Super Sport head questions : voicing & loudness/power
Hi,

i have a few questions about the Splawn Super Sport head :

1) what's the voicing of this head ? Is it more of a Quick Rod (upper mids, 80's) voicing, or more of a Nitro (low mids, modern, kinda scooped) voicing ? Or something else ? It seems to me it's kinda like the Quick Rod with Gear 1 and Gear 2 only but I'd like to be sure.

2) considering it's a small 22w tube head, is it powerful enough, when plugged into a decent 2x12 cab (with the right impedance), to :
a) sound loud enough to compete with a super loud metal band (very-hard-hitting drummer, another guitar player (who uses a EVHIII 50w head on a 2x12 cab), bass, singer, backing vocals) in small to medium venues with no no miking/FOH (except for the vocals) ?
b) sound good enough even when if i have to push the master (or channel volume if there is no master) to get loud enough, i.e does the amp start to sound not as good or even mediocre compared to the channel volume/master sweet spot when the channel volume/master level is pushed to its limits ?
c) keep a decent tube life expectancy if i push the amp to its limits, i.e will i have to change my tubes every 3 months (which would be a pain in the ass :) ) if i play 10 1-hour-long loud live gigs during those 3 months ?

Or do i have to get a Splawn head that's at least 50w, if not more ?

Thank you !

It will sound somewhat like the Quickrod, but only with two gears. It seems like gear 2 has more gain on the SS.
And yes, 20 healthy watts will be more than enough with a hard hitting drummer. Especially with speakers like Vintage 30s.
You might struggle with your cleans if you need loud cleans that are super clean.
OTOH, a tube amp wants to be pushed, otherwise it doesn't sound right. Mind you, with their loop volume control Splawn amps sound great at bedroom levels too.
