The MXR Blue Box is an extremely unique sounding fuzz pedal. It has a standard ¼ inch input and output and is powered by either a 9 volt battery or power supply. It is not a rack mountable effect – it is a foot pedal.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the MXR Blue Box really couldn’t be much easier than it is. It only has two knobs – one for output and another for blend. Since the nature of this pedal isn’t that of a typical fuzz box, these parameters are really all you need when it comes to this pedal. This is overall as easy as it gets when it comes to using a guitar pedal. I haven’t seen the manual for the MXR Blue Box, but I am confidently say that it isn’t necessary as it is a really simple pedal to use.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound of the MXR Blue Box is unlike any other pedal that I’ve really used. While they advertise it as a fuzz and overdrive pedal, this isn’t your typical fuzz or overdrive pedal, and tends to do a lot of weird things that you don’t get with a traditional overdrive pedal. To me this isn’t a bad thing, but users should just know that this isn’t a standard overdrive pedal and is really a combination of fuzz and overdrive mixed with some other kind of effect that is hard to explain. It is almost a lo-fi kind of pedal and when used right can really produce some interesting results.
OVERALL OPINION
I’ve had my MXR Blue Box for about two years and while it isn’t an effect that I use everyday, I love having it around because you never know when it is going to come in handy. The price of this pedal has dropped a bit over the last few years and they are now very cheap. If you are looking for a pedal that is interesting and spontaneous, I would definitely recommend looking into this pedal by listening to some sounds clips of this pedal or trying it out. Overall, an awesome and interesting unique pedal.
