Les modèles fabriqués au Japon durant cette période, notamment dans les ateliers Chushin Gakki, sont aujourd’hui particulièrement recherchés pour leur qualité de lutherie et leur réputation de fiabilité. Véritables héritières de l’ère shred des années 80, ces Charvel japonaises représentent une époque où l’innovation technique et la recherche de performances étaient au cœur de la conception des guitares électriques. Cette Model 3 de 1988 est un superbe exemple de cette période emblématique. Avec son corps en tilleul, son manche en érable vissé et sa touche pensée pour le confort et la vitesse d’exécution, elle offre immédiatement cette sensation de facilité qui a fait le succès des Superstrat. Le manche fin et rapide permet une grande liberté de jeu, aussi bien pour les rythmiques nerveuses que pour les solos techniques, tandis que l’accès aux aigus est particulièrement confortable grâce à la conception typique des instruments Charvel de cette époque. Cette guitare a en outre bénéficié d’un upgrade particulièrement pertinent avec l’installation d’un Seymour Duncan ’78 Model TB, un humbucker conçu pour recréer l’esprit du célèbre micro P.A.F. rebobiné de 1978 qui a largement contribué à façonner le son du hard rock de la fin des années 70 et du début des années 80. Bobiné selon les mêmes spécifications que ce mythique P.A.F. « Rewind », il offre un niveau de sortie modéré, une grande richesse harmonique et une dynamique exceptionnelle. Comparé au micro d’origine, il apporte davantage de précision, une meilleure définition des notes, des médiums plus chantants et des aigus plus ouverts, tout en conservant un grave tendu et parfaitement maîtrisé. Le résultat est un son plus organique, plus expressif et plus nuancé, capable de passer d’un crunch vintage à une saturation puissante avec une remarquable sensibilité au jeu. C’est le type de micro idéal pour retrouver les sonorités emblématiques des premiers Van Halen tout en conservant une excellente polyvalence. Associé aux deux micros simples d’origine, ce Seymour Duncan transforme la configuration HSS en un ensemble particulièrement efficace. À partir de 1988, la marque a donc commencé à installer le Takeuchi TRS, un vibrato plus fiable et plus durable, offrant une excellente stabilité d’accord tout en conservant les possibilités expressives recherchées par les guitaristes de l’époque. Cette évolution témoigne de la volonté de Charvel d’améliorer constamment ses instruments et d’offrir des solutions adaptées aux exigences des musiciens professionnels.
