The SB1-J, Jazz Jr., is our take on what a jazz guitar can be. What it is not is just an electric solid body fitted with flatwounds. Rather, it was designed from the ground up with the jazz artist playing flatwound strings in mind.
It is called the Jazz Jr. because it is not your traditional jazz box. To begin with it is a solid body guitar, with the advantages of that design such as compactness and light weight, greater sustain and resistance to feedback at high volumes.
At the heart of the J model are the pickups. They are a unique set of components designed and built exclusively for Pinter Instruments by Joshua Spataro of Righteous Sound Pickups. Without giving away too many of Josh’s secrets, we can say that the bridge pickup is based on his new 21:21 low output humbucker; and the neck pickup is a highly modified Revelator Tele pickup. Like our guitar in general, they are designed expressly for jazz, fusion and progressive stylings and were created in collaboration with Mike Pinter to enhance flatwound electric strings and compensate for some of the characteristic quirks of flatwounds such as the sometimes unpleasant difference in brightness and tone between the wound strings and treble plain strings in the typical set. The wood-like inserts in the covers are decorative and as far as we know do not impart any changes to the tone or performance of the pickups.
This guitar shares the ergonomically designed body and basic neck shape of the other Pinter six string guitar models. Differences include medium, instead of jumbo, frets; and a hand shaped bone nut which imparts the clarity and crispness that we like for jazz playing. Other features include a straight string path headstock with a ten degree tiltback for the best compromise between tuning stability and tonal transfer from the strings; a chrome Hipshot Fixed Bridge; individually selected Pau Ferro fretboard with our new wood inlays; and Hipshot locking tuners. Schaller strap locks are installed and a monogrammed Original Fuzz black canvas strap is included.
The guitar is equipped and set up with Optima pure nickel Jazz Swing strings in the .010–.049 gauging. The inherent tone of the Jazz Jr. can best be described as a slightly understated, with a very even tone and volume across the strings, clear and acoustic in quality, while also delivering the sustain and punch of a good solid body electric design.
The SB1-J model: offered with pride for your consideration and playing satisfaction at US$2,500, in a choice of three conervative colors and including a custom fit Protec Contego hybrid case.
