It's big, thick, fat and sharp and cheap. What more does anybody want in a bass pick? I've used the stubbies on acoustic, electric guitars and basses. On electric guitars, the attack was a bit too much, too thick, too strong, almost just like bashing the hell out of the guitar strings which most players already do with thinner picks so doing it with a thicker pick doesn't help.
On acoustic it sounds decent though I've found a better pick to use for acoustics (in another review)
Then I tried this on bass, I'm not a bass player but I play the bass if you know what I mean. Sometimes I use my fingers and sometimes I use a pick depending on what I'm playing and if I can't get the fingers to sound dynamically right, I use a pick to keep the dynamics consistent.
The attack of the stubby 3mm on a bass string seems to be perfect, it doesn't flop around like some thin nylon picks would nor does it strike TOO hard and flange the string about too much when struck properly. Not to mention the tip is quite sharp so you can still get the top end sound of the string to come out when you strike it, not just a massive blur of low end frequencies, which I like. But again, that doesn't suit everybody, depends on the context of the song etc.
However, as a pick, it's strikes the string well with a pleasing sound and it doesn't warp or break too quickly like some. Best off the shelf bass pick in my opinion.

Once I discovered that larger picks suited my style of playing I went to tried to find the largest picks I could find. That happened to be the 3mm Dunlop Big Stubby. When I went to play with these picks I noticed something that I didnt like about them compared to what I had been using the 2mm Gator Grip picks. I noticed that personally I prefer an abrasive surface on the pick even If its not where my fingers are touching it. With the smooth plastic on the Big Stubby it comes off the string very smoothly. Some people may like this but I prefer some resistance on the string. I might be crazy but thats just what a prefer. The textured portion of the pick also does not provide much traction when your fingers become sweaty. A lot of picks have this same problem. I have seen companies starting to make picks with holes in them in an attempt to provide more traction for your fingers. I also noticed that I prefer a more blunted edge on the pick. A lot of people including my buddy who I jam with uses Jazz XL's because they are so sharp. For some reason I do not like the sharp picks and the Big Stubby is pretty sharp. This may have to do with the how it feels when it is coming off the string. Picks are a very personal thing I think so you have to play around with them and find the one that works best for you.
