Au premier coup d'œil, Predator a des petits airs d'usine à gaz. Ce n'est qu'une impression due d'une part au fait qu'il y a beaucoup de réglages possibles pour chaque oscillateur (glop!) et d'autre part, à ce que l'assignation des contrôleurs n'est pas un modèle de rationalité (pas glop, quoique rien de bien grave.)

Aux oscillateurs 2 et 3 seulement, on peut assigner une modulation FM ou en anneau.
On trouve ensuite deux filtres avec un grand choix de types. Seul le premier est résonant, possède une saturation, sa propre enveloppe et son propre LFO, ainsi que tous les réglages possibles (keytrack, sensibilité à la vélocité et à la molette de modulation.)
Pour finir avec le haut de l'interface, on trouve encore l'enveloppe d'amplitude, le réglage de volume général, celui de sa sensibilité à la vélocité et un panoramique.
En bas, on a un LFO dédié au pitch, deux enveloppes ADSR et deux autres LFOs assignables à n'importe quel paramètre (tout ça aurait peut-être pu être simplifié) plus huit voies de modulation permettant de contrôler tout paramètre via midi. Ici, on peut aussi paramétrer la molette de pitch bend.
Par ailleurs, en cliquant sur "arp", on ouvre une grande fenêtre permettant de régler l'arpégiateur (16 pas).
Ce n'est pas tout: On a encore les effets (21 sortes de bonne qualité) avec leur propre assignation de contrôle par midi (deux voies, oui ce n'est pas très simple.)
Reste encore le choix du "play mode" (Poly, Mono 1 et 2, Legato, Arp et Unison 2 à 6 voix), le portamento, l'accès aux très nombreux présets d'usine et le "morphing" permettant de mélanger deux présets pour en créer d'autres.
Enfin, en cliquant sur "adv" on ouvre une petite fenêtre comportant des réglages d'ordre généraux (oversampling, global tuning, analog drift - pour faire dérailler les oscillateurs à la manière d'un vieil analogique -, etc.)
ADÉQUATION/PERFORMANCE
Predator a toujours fonctionné sans le moindre problème sur Mac Book Pro avec MacOS 10.7.5 et Digital Performer. Il est peu gourmand en ressources CPU en mono, mais sitôt qu'on joue des accords un peu fournis, la consommation s'accroit rapidement. Ce n'est pas un problème sur les ordinateurs actuels, mais sur une machine un peu ancienne on peut assez vite arriver à saturer le processeur.
AVIS GLOBAL
Je possède Predator depuis de nombreuses années. Pourtant, je l'ai longtemps sous utilisé car je le considérais comme strictement orienté techno-dancefloor. Le fait est que les presets fournis sont essentiellement dédiés à ce genre. J'ai donc mis longtemps à réaliser qu'avec toutes les formes d'onde et tous les paramètres offerts (dont certains assez originaux) Predator a d'énormes possibilités qui permettent de s'éloigner largement de cette vocation. En fait, je peux maintenant le dire: Oui, Predator est un synthé polyvalent. Par ailleurs, on peut obtenir assez facilement des sons chauds.
D'autre part, même si l'interface aurait pu être simplifiée en ce qui concerne les enveloppes, LFOs et autres contrôleurs, ce n'est pas du tout un instrument difficile à programmer. Tous les réglages sont très efficaces: dès qu'on touche à un potard, on entend immédiatement ce qu'on fait.
Malgré ses sept ans d'âge, Predator reste tout à fait d'actualité. Il est efficace dans tous les types de sons leads, pads, stabs et je trouve ses basses particulièrement intéressantes.
Dans ma "synthotèque", Predator est en concurrence avec deux autres synthés à table d'ondes: Massive de Native Instruments et Gladiator de Tone 2. Mais je dirais que les trois se complètent très bien.
Si je l'ai découvert avec un peu de retard, c'est maintenant un synthé que je suis très content d'avoir.

(contenu en anglais)I have used many Rob Papen products over the last 3 years, the Predator is not my favorite one that they have come out with but it is very good. There are just a ton of options to use and tweak to get the sound you are looking for. You can edit any and all parameters of the sounds with the easy to use interface on the Predator. The synth sounds are very good and fit my style perfectly. I also have Rob Papen Punch VST as well, that is my favorite one out of the two because I feel like the sound sounds are a bit more light and ambient. The sounds of Predator are a little harsher and aggressive which is great for some of the records that I am working on.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
Installing it was pretty quick and easy. It is light on my CPU and does not take up much disk space. I have used this synth in FL Studio and in Cubase. It works great in both of those digital audio workstations and I can run many copies of it simultaneously without having to worry about it freezing or slowing down the productivity of my computer.
OVERALL OPINION
The sounds are awesome, it has 3 oscillators that you can tweak and get them how you want them along with a whole bunch of parameters to tweak. The filters are all manual and if you have a basic understand how of them you can get some cool sounds and effects going. Not all of the preset banks are good though, I am not a fan of the Gfunk banks, I just don’t think it feels “Gfunk-ish” at all.
The new version of Predator is out (1.6) though I have not upgrade to it yet, but I have heard that there are more ambient sounding synths. That is why I have Rob Papen Punch though, so I don’t feel the need to upgrade just yet but maybe in the future I will upgrade to Predator 1.6.

OVERALL OPINION
Predator by Rob Papen is an amazingly simple, yet powerfully deep synth. The interface is well organized; knobs and controls are accessible and easy to use. Creating sounds from scratch is fun and rewarding, and for those who are less adventurous, the synth comes with a vast array of presets from the master himself, Rob Papen. One of the most enjoyable features are the randomize buttons, which allow the user to generate new sounds without much effort. This vicious beast has 128 waveforms, not just saw, square, sine, and triangle. There are also many ways to modulate and tons of high quality effects
Predator suits any kind of electronic music, and can produce many kinds of sounds — cutting leads, meaty basses, soothing pads, atmospherics, rhythmic soundscapes, etc., but where it really shines is with leads and arpeggios. For this reason, Predator is an electronic dance music producer's dream synth. Tracks created with this synth usually sit well in the mix, standing out just enough, but not getting lost and buried. Grrrrr, a gentle roar. The only area whereby I would suggest improvement is the patch browser it could be more intuitive. Otherwise, it's all there and is an extremely stable plugin. It has never crashed on me, launching smoothly and performing well in Logic, Studio One, and Numerology. Considering the depth of the sound, CPU demand is not bad, and the sound quality of the most recent version is fantastic, without any noticeable aliasing.
Customer/User support is excellent. Rob and Jon are active on the threads and respond to emails within a day or two. They are great people creating great plugins — a pleasure to deal with!
I highly recommend Predator to any electronic musician or producer looking to add a powerful, killer VSTi to their plugin collection. This synth cannot do it all, but what it can do — it does REALLY well. It's a wonderful soft synth that successfully combines the sonic nuances of analog and digital to deliver a punchy modern sound that you may quickly become addicted and never be able to live without. That's what happened to me! I've been going to counseling and a recovery program for nearly a year, and it hasn't helped. I keep launching every chance I get! Thank you, RPCX, for creating such a ferociously addictive synth. Tommy Zai gives Predator three thumbs up. Love it!
BTW, if you search online you will find many threads on electronic music forums comparing synths, i.e. this synth versus that synth. Don't be surprised if Predator is mentioned a lot!

I really don’t use it much anymore because I have pretty much ran through all of the presets multiple times so I have kind of put this aside for now.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
Predator runs great, and it really ran good on my vista , mac and xp laptop. I had no compatibility issues no matter which system I chose to run this on. You can run it multipe times to without it causing any errors or crashing on you. I havent really created my own presets on it yet, that’s probably the reason that I don’t really use it much anymore. I think creating your own presets is simple too, and the price of this vst is very respectable and affordable. Most vst that are of this caliber go for way more money than this does.
OVERALL OPINION
Sounds are awesome and I have no complaints about them, there is a lot of potential with your music and creativity when using the Rob Papen Predator vst plug in. I love all of the synths a basses, everything seems to sound really fat and rich. All of the basses are full and deep type of basses that can really expand your frequency ratio in your songs. It will really fill out your music when using the basslines in Rob Papen Predator. I am still curious to know if they plan on coming out with a part 2 or an upgrade to this vst. It would be great if they could add some more synths from the developers. I think the developers of Rob Papen Predator did a heck of a job when creating the preset sounds in this vst.

The manual is fairly helpful but in all honesty I haven't needed it much. One thing I should mention is it seems to be written in a different language and then translated. Either that or the writer has horrible grammar issues, making it somewhat hard to read at times. Then configuration and setup is pretty simple, especially if you are familiar with the setup of a traditional synth (vco, lfo, effects, etc...). I have to say at first the synth was a little hard to get used to only because everything is so flashy looking. I like GUI interfaces a lot but sometimes there fonts, colors and overall structure can be a little convoluted. After an hour or so though I was very comfortable using it. The typical functions all appear on the front so they are very accessible. It did take me a minute to find the "Arp" feature. Its a small little text area near the middle/lower left that you click on, but its a little to small for my taste, but once you find it, you'll be fine.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
The software works perfectly in both Logic 9 and Abelton 8. So far all of my user presets have remained, every time I come back to the synth, its right where I left it and it has never crashed. As for performance, this baby gets a huge 10. It works very well inside my DAW's and responds flawlessly to all midi controls. I have been using this one for about 5 months.
OVERALL OPINION
What I like most about this synth is the same thing I love about all rob papen synths, the amazing sound. This thing has a lot of beefy sounds and they are all nice and warm. If you write dance/electronica, this is a must have in your arsenal. What I don't like about this synth is at first its a little confusing in its general format. Other than that this thing is a real gem. I paid around $200 for this synth and I think overall it was a really good investment. The sound quality is amazing especially for a software plugin. I use this a lot and I feel like I hear it on a lot of tracks out there. I own and have used a lot of software synths and I find myself using this, Rob Papen Blue and Absynth the most when it comes to writing electronica. Publié le 30/01/11 à 02:41 (contenu en anglais)This VST is a good VST for anyone making RNB music. The leads and bass synths in this VST are quality. The GUI can be pretty confusing. Sounds are seperated through banks and then split into sections for different genres of sound. The actual layout on the GUI can be confusing, as there is a lot of un explained knobs and cogs that the new user will not know anything about and they will be intimidated. However this can be fun for the new user, they can play with the knobs themselves (pause) and find out what they do. This VST has worked fine with both Ableton Live and FL Studio.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
Predator VST works flawlessly with no hitches for me, on both of my computers. From what I know it has never ever caused a crash in any of my DAW's. The load time of the presets is nigh on instant and very impressive. However it uses my despised menu system that pops up and floods your screen to find sounds. Many VST's do this and I do not like it in general. I prefer the traditional browser selection method in VST's. I have had this VST for a year or so now and it has never let me down when I am looking for a quick bass sound to fill a mix. The CPU load of this VST is seemingly light too as it has never pushed either of my computers (1.8ghz pentium & a 2.5ghz core 2 quad).
OVERALL OPINION
I'm in love with some of the bass and lead sounds in Predator VST. They really fill out any mix and sound nice in the process. This is one of my favourite VST's for RNB production and smooth sounds. They sound brilliant in any RNB or Hip Hop song. Some of the pads in this VST are seemingly thin and shoddy though. This is a weakness of Predator VST. These sounds are pretty much just filler for the stock library. To my knowledge there are other sound banks available to use in this VST, however I have not explored them yet. I do not like the way presets are selected though and the actual GUI.
