The Stageworks UM66 is a simple, dynamic microphone that is designed for use on the stage and for live sound reinforcement. It’s definitely a vocal microphone, although I guess you could use it for an instrument as well if you needed to. The mic will pick up frequencies between 80 Hz and 12 kHz, really making it unsuitable for the recording studio. The mic has an on/off switch, furthering it’s usefulness as vocal microphone. It comes with a suitable microphone clip. Stageworks is a company owned by Sam Ash, which is a New York based musical product retailer, so I don’t believe that these can be found anywhere else.
OVERALL OPINION
The Stageworks UM66 is really about as cheap of a live vocal microphone as you’ll find. They don’t sound great by any means, but will get the job done in a live band practice situation. I have three of these that I used to use for vocals with my band in high school, but I’m pretty sure that all of them are broken now. While they definitely don’t have a good enough sound to be used for a real live show, they’re fine for practicing in your basement like we were. Sam Ash actually gives away two of these with the purchase of one now, which I don’t believe was something that was available a number of years ago when I got mine. I guess the thinking is that two of them are going to break! For the price you really can’t do much complaining, but if you’re looking for a decent vocal microphone, the UM66 isn’t going to be it. It’s certainly below average, but it’s also affordable for everyone under the sun. I was pretty young when I bought these, so money was a main concern here. If you’re really on a tight budget and need a couple of vocal microphones to practice with, these will do the job okay until they break. I’d encourage serious musicians to spend a little bit more money on something that will last, but I guess you can’t go wrong with buy one and get two free as offered on Sam Ash’s website…
