The KRK 6000's are a set of passive monitors, designed for use in studios of any type. The KRK 6000's do come as active monitors as well, but the ones that I've used are passive and require an external power amplifier. These monitors aren't ideal for mixing, but can do the job if you know them well, as is the case with a lot of monitors out there. They are certainly more than suitable for monitoring during recording and playback, as well as general listening. They should be used only as near field monitors.

SOUNDS

The sound of the KRK 6000's is generally pretty good for a set of monitors in this price range and size. They don't pack as much low end as would be ideal on a great set of mixing monitors, but like most monitors, if you know them well you can definitely mix on them. There is a lot of high and mid range clarity here, and even though the low end isn't ideal, there is still a good amount present as well. I definitely trust them to deliver a true sound, although I would definitely check all of my mixes on other sets of speakers, as I would do with any monitors.

OVERALL OPINION

KRK is known for making some of the best band for your buck studio monitors around, and the KRK 6000's are a prime example. In this price range I'd be hard pressed to find a set of monitors that sound this good, as these are very authentic sounding for such a small price. I don't think that they make them anymore, but you can find them used if you'd like. I'd probably recommend getting the active version of these monitors if you can, as it saves you from needing a power amp. All in all, I'd highly recommend the KRK 6000's for anyone looking for some bang for your buck in a pair of studio monitors for your home studio...
