Ceci n'est pas un avis sur les nouveautés de Live 11 vs Live 10 mais celui d'un débutant dans Live.

Il tourne actuellement sur MacPro (i5 2.5 GHz 16Go Catalina) mais je suis en train de me construire un PC dédié musique sur AMD 7 3700X, 3.6 GHz 32 GoRAM.

Live ne pose aucun problème de fonctionnement sur macOS mais ce sont les plug-ins qui en posent, gourmands en échantillons, entre autres Analog Lab d'Arturia.

Les branchements de tous les claviers ont été immédiats, toutes les interfaces sont reconnues sans problème aucun.

J'apprécie la double vue Session et Arrangement. Sur ces vues, tout y est, les pistes, les choix possibles, les réglages d'instrument, les effets, les notes midi......

J'apprécie la double vue Session et Arrangement. Sur ces vues, tout y est, les pistes, les choix possibles, les réglages d'instrument, les effets, les notes midi ou les enregistrements audio. Bon, à force tout est un peu petit il faut un écran full HD minimum et encore pas trop loin des yeux.

Avec un clavier d'ordinateur et en fouillant un peu sur le net on trouve tous les raccourcis clavier possibles pour se passer d'un contrôleur midi.

Mais je me suis payé un Novation Launchkey mini MK3 qui est un petit mais formidable contrôleur et qui permet d'acquérir Live Lite donc d'upgrader ensuite vers Live Suite ce qui rembourse les deux tiers du prix du clavier! Le Launchkey plus une souris suffisent à tout faire. En route pour l'aventure.

Pas possible de détailler tout ce qui va ou pourrait aller mieux, juste partager mon sentiment, mes impressions d'une prise en main.

Venant de GarageBand, l'immédiateté de composition, l'ouverture d'horizons et la puissance de créativité que procure Ableton live m’ont juste fait oublier les contraintes de réglages et de programmation qui nous rendent quelquefois bloqués dans la démarche.

Puissant, comment çà? Vous lancez Live, vous créer des pistes midi et dans chaque piste vous envoyez un clip sélectionné dans la bibliothèque Live proposée à gauche. On peut pas faire plus simple, tout se cale au tempo (Warp Beats), deux trois clips de drums, un de basse, deux ou trois phrases de synthé avec ou sans arpège, et voilà mon morceau déjà créé. 15 minutes. Avec ma souris ou avec les rangées de pads de mon contrôleur, j'arrête tel clip, je relance tel autre. Je me mets sur une piste audio, j'y joue le son sélectionné sur mon MODX pour un lead ou une nappe. Génial. Et le son! Des heures durant

En regardant (en français) les vidéos de Knarf (25 videos de l’avent Les Sondiers) ou de Vivre Son Live (on peut se payer son cours pour débutant pour 20 euros) ou encore de Tout Sur Ableton ou bien celles tout simplement sur le site d’Ableton, on peut aller très loin et très rapidement à produire quelquechose de sympa.

Seul regret il n’existe pas (encore?) de manuel de référence en français, on peut le télécharger pour Live10 en français et compléter les chapitres manquants en anglais sur l’aide en ligne sur Live11. Ça va venir je suppose.

Le choix des samples n’est pas très pratique si on ne se constitue pas d’abord ses propres bibliothèques en les sélectionnant et les groupant dans des dossiers personnels dans Live.

L’accès au choix des instruments et des plug-ins est intuitif, et bien organisé, le choix des kits de drums est juste immense. Il me faudra un peu de temps pour utiliser les instruments Ableton, entre autres les synthétiseurs. Pour l’instant j’utilise le MODX en entrée audio sur des pistes audio tout simplement ou bien les formidables vst OB-Xd et TAL J-8 sur des pistes midi.

Gros avantage en audio, par exemple avec le MODX, c'est de pouvoir changer de son (performance) sur le MODX pour chaque clip, enregistrer ainsi plusieurs clips sur une seule piste, chose très pratique et puissante de variété. Impossible dans GarageBand. Le jour et la nuit.

Brancher et jouer le MODX - ou tout autre instrument générateur de sons- en midi permettra aussi d' affecter un son différent à chaque clip sur une même piste, en associant son synthé à une piste MIDI comme "instrument externe" et en utilisant la fonction Program Change dans chaque clip : ATTENTION à bien augmenter de +1 les numéros de MSB (N° de bank)et LSB (sous-bank) par rapport à son synthé!

Les possibilités de réglage des sons, des modulations, des longueurs de loops, etc, etc tout çà est intuitif à condition que vous ayez déjà un peu pratiqué autre chose (Garage Band est super sur Mac et gratuit mais on peut le faire avec Cubase LE ou AI je sais plus, celui qui est gratuit sur Windows). Cubase ne m’a pas apparu aussi immédiat à assimiler que GarageBand.

Partir de complètement zéro en MAO dans Live nécessite je pense un peu de visionnage de videos et de tutos. Puis se faire la main gratuitement sur Live Lite ou à peu de frais sur Live Intro.

Alors quelle version acheter, Standard ou Suite? Le mieux, pour se faire une opinion est d'acheter la version standard et charger en essai gratuit le Live Suite puis comparer fonction par fonction, bibliothèque de sons et d'instruments, fonctionnalités d'arrangement, etc... je n'ai pas fait ce travail pour être honnête.

L ‘alternative que j’avais en tête était Logic Pro sur Mac OS, probablement un meilleur choix rapport qualité/prix quand on a un Mac, et si on est passé par GarageBand c’est encore plus logique de le choisir et facile d’évoluer. Il est trois fois moins cher que Live Suite, avec énormément d’outils également et l’intégration Mac OS tellement puissante.

Je vais garder mon Mac pour tout ce qui ne tourne pas autour d'Ableton parce que MacOS c'est quand même le pied par rapport à Windows...

Mais je vais évoluer sur PC parce que à performances égales, Mac est plus de deux fois plus cher tout en restant portable donc moins évolutif.

Autre avantage avec une carte son milieu de gamme sur le PC, on peut brancher son ordi en optique S/PDIF sur son interface audio externe, ici Audient id22, et s'offrir la qualité digitale de restitution voire par la suite se payer un système type Home Cinéma 7.1 pour une restitution spatiale du son.

D'ailleurs...Coût du bonheur: PC haut de gamme (cf plus haut et avec 3To de ROM) monté soi-même + souris gamer 1500€ hors écran(s), MODX6 1100 €, Ableton Live 530€, Launchkey 95€, deux enceintes actives pour mixer sur le MODX 400€ (moi c'est des T7V) ou bien un casque 160€ (Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro !) et pour plus tard système 7.1 Yamaha/Focal à partir de 1100€.

Ce sera donc Ableton Live pour un plaisir qui n'est pas prêt de s'éteindre...
