Publié le 01/09/16 à 00:41J'ai acheté ce plugin, légendaire ôserais-je presque dire, sans l'avoir testé avant… Je m'étais basé sur les excellents avis recueillis au travers des forums et j'y étais allé les oreilles fermées pour ainsi dire, sans doutes guidé par le sentiment que pour les reprises des années 80, style que j'affectionne tout particulièrement, ce serait une reverb incontournable.
Je ne peux pas dire que ça soit un mauvais plug et je suis persuadé qu'en approfondissant la chose, je me surprendrais à l'affectionner tout particulièrement mais à ce stade, je ne suis toujours pas tombé amoureux de sa couleur. Je dis "sa" parce qu'il n'en a pas plusieurs. Si l'on met de côté les (autres) différents...…

Je ne peux pas dire que ça soit un mauvais plug et je suis persuadé qu'en approfondissant la chose, je me surprendrais à l'affectionner tout particulièrement mais à ce stade, je ne suis toujours pas tombé amoureux de sa couleur. Je dis "sa" parce qu'il n'en a pas plusieurs. Si l'on met de côté les (autres) différents effets qu'il propose, baptisé les program modes et dont un seul peut être activé à la fois (à savoir delay, phaser, chorus, echo et space), on se trouve face a une seule reverb dont l'édition est somme toute limitée.
Au départ, le panneau frontal peut dérouter dans le sens où certaines sérigraphies et voyants (à part pour le predelay) n'ont d'utilité que lorsque l'un ou l'autre effet est sélectionné. Intéressons-nous à son effet "principal" : la reverb. Ce mode offre 16 possibilités de decay (durée de réverbération), calculées à 1 KHz. Celles-ci vont de 0,4 à 4,5 secondes. Les deux tirettes à droite de celle du decay permettent de diminuer ou d'augmenter la durée des réverbérations à 300 Hz et 6 KHz et ce, en appliquant à la durée choisie initialement 4 multiplicateurs : 0,5 - 1 - 1,5 - 2.
Enfin, et c'est assez anecdotique à mon sens, on peut simuler le bruit du hardware émulé en cliquant sur le bouton noise… J'avoue ne pas avoir creusé de ce côté mais UA nous assure que le niveau de bruit varie selon les modes et que ça peut ajouter un caractère… insolite!
Pour conclure, j'avoue me sentir parfois à l'étroit avec cette réverb pourtant très appréciée des utilisateurs (qui dans bien des cas lui préfèrent malgré tout la 140). Le rendu sonore est évidemment vintage (donc tout sauf réaliste), avec un côté dense mais sourd.
Evidemment, je ne compte pas en rester là avec ce plug et un edit suivra si d'aventure, mon sentiment venait a changer radicalement, ce qui n'est pas impossible.

With its single reverb program and iconic lever-driven control surface, the EMT 250 is still an indis- pensable tool within the record-making elite and is widely considered one of the best-sounding reverbs ever made. Although only around 250 were built, the EMT 250 has made an immeasurable impact on record making history in the hands of studio legends like George Massenburg, Bruce Swedien, Allen Sides and many others. Captured from Allen Sides’ unit at Ocean Way Re- cording, endorsed by EMT Studiotechnik GmbH in Germany, and re-engi- neered for plug-in use by EMT 250 creator Dr. Barry Blesser from his original documentation, the UAD version of the EMT 250 goes beyond emulation and is the very same algorithm found in the original units—for a fraction of its orig- inal $25,000 price!
Besides the coveted reverb program, the EMT 250 for UAD provides the five additional effects (Delay, Phasing, Chorus, Echo and Space) also included in the original unit. Lighted pushbuttons select the desired program, while four click-stop levers provide the primary reverb parameters of delay time, prede- lay, and high and low Filtering. LED ladders provide additional visual rein- forcement of program selection and parameter positioning. Like the hard- ware, the plug-in operates in “quad,” with two discrete stereo output pairs accessed through the added front/rear output switch. Additional “digital only” features include dry/wet mix, wet solo, reduced noise (if desired), and hard bypass via the EMT power icon.
All input and output characteristics of the EMT 250 are fully emulated in the plug-in. This includes all of its idiosyncrasies, such as the A/D and D/A anti-aliasing filters (which are not linear-phase), system latency, input clip- ping, and limited frequency response. All these quirks embellish the unique sonic signature.

(contenu en anglais)I can't say too much about the installation process with the Universal Audio EMT 250 as it was already installed on the system that I used it on. However, I don't know about any installation or compatibility problems if there were any. The interface of the software isn't complicated as you've got only simple parameters to work with. There are a few sliders to set the time of the reverb, as well as the output level and the mix. There are also some other effects like chorus, echo, and phasing. Even those without much experience with reverb plug-ins should be able to get the hang of using the plug-in rather quickly as there isn't anything out of the ordinary here. I don't think a manual is necessary for this reason, but haven't seen one so I can't say anything about its make up.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
The system that I have run the Universal Audio EMT 250 plug-in on is a Pro Tools HD based system which runs with an Apple G5 computer. Pro Tools runs with a Digidesign 192 I/O and a series of Apogee converters. I can't say that I've ever had a problem running the plug-in within this configuration as I've been able to run a few of them within a single session if I so choose. However, please keep in mind that I use auxiliary channels to run reverb plug-ins to save processing power, so I've only had a need to run two or three of them at a time and can't speak to how well it would run past this point or on a non HD system. I've only been using the plug-in for a number of months, but it isn't too hard to get accustomed to the plug-in so within this short while I've been able to do a lot with it...

Being that the Universal Audio EMT 250 is modeled after a particular unit, it has the same interface of the EMT 250 and a similar type of sound. While I haven't used the original 250 all that often, it does have a similar sound, although not as great as the original. However, for those who don't have access to the original, the plug-in version will definitely get the job done. Even if you are just looking for a good reverb plug-in and aren't familiar with the EMT 250, I'd still recommend checking out this plug as it has a lot to bring to the table in terms of high sound quality and unique reverb tones...
