Citation : Shoppers show their clout in September
15:21:02 - 09/10/2003
CHICAGO (AFX) - Consumers flaunted their tax rebates and fatter paychecks at
shopping centers and malls in September as retailers rang up stunning results
for the crucial back-to-school spending season.
An early tally of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi's chain store index of the
nation's largest retailers showed an aggregate 5.9 percent jump in sales at
stores open longer than a year - an industry benchmark known as comparable-store
sales. That's stronger than the 5.1 percent performance in August and well ahead
of the 4.5 percent expectation to mark the strongest showing since March of
2002.
Thomson First Call's preliminary total came in at an amazing 6.1 percent vs. the
4.2 percent average of analysts reporting.
"Wow," said First Call retail analyst Ken Perkins. "These are pretty amazing
numbers, and clearly the strongest numbers we've seen all year."
Wal-Mart, Gap, Chico's, Neiman-Marcus, Children's Place, Aeropostale, BJs
Wholesale and Pier 1 Imports were among those that blew away analysts. They also
represent the solidity of consumer spending because the results were strong
across the board. Many retailers also upped earnings expectations for the fiscal
third quarter.
Consider some of the numbers against expectations at First Call: Wal-Mart
posted same-store sales last month that were 6 percent, higher than the 4.9
percent average forecast; Chico's , up 22 percent on a same-store basis compared
to a 9.4 pct expectation; Neiman-Marcus , up 13.6 percent compared to the 0.8
percent gain expected; Children's Place , an eye-popping 30 percent same-store
surge vs. the 6.6 percent anticipated.
Aeropostale jumped 22 percent on a comp-store basis while analysts were
forecasting an average of 6.8 percent; BJs delivered 12.4 percent instead of
the 7.7 percent expected and Pier 1 was up 2 percent instead of the minus-4
percent expected.
