The Wunder Audio PEQ1 is a high quality channel strip consisting of a microphone preamp and a three band EQ. The unit has both XLR and 1/4 inch connections and is an all analog piece of equipment. It isn't a rack mountable piece of gear as it looks like it will fit in a non traditional type of racking system.
UTILIZATION
The make up of the Wunder Audio PEQ1 is very similar to that of most Neve EQs and has been widely copied, so if you are familiar with the configuration of Neve modules, you'll understand how to use this without any problems. Each of the EQ bands has parameters to choose the frequency and to set the gain and there is also a knob for setting the level of the mic pre. There is also a switch for selecting either the line or mic input as well as an EQ bypass and a phase button. I've never had a need to look at the manual so I can't say anything about it...
SOUND QUALITY
The sound quality of the Wunder Audio PEQ1 is everything I look for in analog channel strip. It is perfect for any type of application as the EQ makes it possible to shape the sound of this to fit any situation. I've used it on vocals, drums, and electric guitar and the strip has gone beyond my expectations for all three applications. This isn't modeled after any specific Neve, but rather after a one of a kind custom model. It really has one of the best sounds I have heard from a channel strip, both in terms of the mic preamp itself and the EQ. It is both clean and warm and is truly the perfect combination of these attributes...
OVERALL OPINION
While Wunder Audio's PEQ1 is very similar to a lot of Neve models, this is still a very unique model. If you like the Neve sound (which you would be crazy not to), then you'll definitely like what the PEQ1 brings to the table. The price is expensive and probably out of the price range for home studio owners, but I would absolutely recommend this to professionals looking for top notch tone. The PEQ1 is one of the coolest Neve copies that I have used and would definitely recommend looking into it...
