The Telefunken/Siemens V 72 is a dual channel microphone preamplifier generally considered one of the best ever made. It is an all analog unit and has 1/4 inch connections as well as connections to hook it up to a console. It is indeed rack mountable and will take up two rack spaces.
UTILIZATION
Using the Telefunken/Siemens V 72 is incredibly easy as it only has a knob for the level coming into the preamp. It has a switch for phantom power and beyond this there really isn't anything else to this preamp. Even if you don't have much experience with preamps, this is as easy as it gets as all you have to do it dial in the level that you want to get. Since this is an older piece of gear I've never seen a manual, but unless you need one for the schematics or something like that, a manual isn't necessary at all.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound quality of the Telefunken/Siemens V 72 is absolutely incredible. Everything comes in crystal clear and full of life and no matter what else you are using it with it will do its job great. It doesn't color the sound but does have its own signature sound, which is really just a really clear and full sounding signal. While it certainly matters what type of microphone you are using, I find that this does a great job in picking up the subtle things that some of the best microphones have to offer.
OVERALL OPINION
I've only had the pleasure of using the Telefunken/Siemens V 72 a few times as the one that we have at the studio I work at has been broken for a while, the few times that I used it I was blown away with the sound quality. It definitely lives up to its name and Telefunken is a company that I really trust to give me quality across the board. I can't say that recommend buying the Telefunken/Siemens V 72 as it is really just too expensive unless you are professional or loaded with money! Overall, the Telefunken/Siemens V 72 is definitely one of the best microphone preamps out there and is a pre that all engineers should try out if they have the ability to.
