Citation : UPF researchers announce to bring the reactable to the market.
Barcelona, Spain/Cannes, France, January 27th. 2008:
At this year’s MIDEM
conference the reactable was presented as the winner of the “Hottest Music Biz
Start‐Up Award”. At this occasion Dr. Sergi Jordà announced that before the end of
2008 a newly formed start‐up company plans to deliver the award winning
musical instrument to the market. The synthesizer with its revolutionary multi‐
touch interface is currently being used by the Icelandic singer Björk as a key
instrument of her “’Volta” world tour. Following this announcement, the
instrument will Rinally become available to all potential customers such as
professional musicians, sound studios and other music related businesses.
About the reactable
The reactable has a tangible, visually compelling and intuitive user interface, which
makes music visible and almost graspable. It is based on a luminous round table
and can be played by several simultaneous performers, who can move, rotate and
relate simple acrylic objects that represent the elementary building blocks of
electronic music.
Following its viral popularity boosted by YouTube, the reactable has been shown
in more than 100 concerts and public installations in 25 countries. The instrument
has also been acquired by several science museums in Europe and America, and
adopted by professional musicians such as Björk.
About the company
The newly formed start‐up company is a university spin‐off by the four digital
luthiers (Sergi Jordà, Martin Kaltenbrunner, Günter Geiger and Marcos Alonso)
who conceived and developed the instrument. The research team has been
working within the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in
Barcelona Spain, one of the most prestigious computer music research centres in
the world.
Due to the overwhelming popular demand, the research team Rinally has decided
to produce the instrument at an industrial scale and make it available to the
general public. The company plans to deliver the Rirst reactable before the end of
2008. Potential customers can request more detailed information by writing to
reactable@iua.upf.edu
For any kind of B2B related inquires, such as production, distribution and support achannels, interested companies also should get in touch by writing to
