"After trying it out and disliking the sound I opened it up. It contains 10 4558 opamps and one 12AX7 tube that runs in 'starved plate operation'. The plate voltages are 11Volts and 2V (typical 12AX7 voltages are around 200-250 Volts). The tube still works but it has very low gain, and creates lots of distortion. The gain is made up with the op-amps. This kind of circuit was popular in those digital rack processors with a tube built in. Because they sounded crap, manufacturers mostly gave up and went back to proper high-voltage tube preamps.
You still see starved-plate type circuits in solid-state gear, where the manufacturer wants to put a tube in for marketing purposes, but doesn't want the hassle of adding a high-voltage power supply. The technical term for a circuit like this is a 'market follower'
And that is exactly what the TK999 is. A marketing gag. I am selling the Tube King. I hate it's sound. It definitely gets in the way of making music. I wish it had a proper Tube circuitand no opamps like the Matchless Hotbox"
