I first tested the AT4080 by recording some test tracks with an acoustic guitar, and the results were impressive to say the least. Both the warmth and the sparkle that you would expect from a ribbon is very much in evidence, with the guitar achieving a clarity that made open chords ring through. At this point I feel inclined to admit that I’m not the world’s most delicate guitarist, and as a result the rhythm tracks I record often tend to sound a little muddy and indistinct when put through a lesser microphone. None of that clunkiness was in evidence here though, with each string singing back at me from the recording. Suitably pleased, I next tried a vocal track, and it was here that the mic became not just impressive but something of a revelation. For singers who are lucky enough to have quite a wide vocal range, the experience of exploring the dynamic range on offer here is incredibly satisfying. Most of the melodies I write are pitched high, and as a result my vocal recordings sometimes need doubling with a lower backing vocal to stop me sounding too reedy. No such effort was required here though, with the vocal takes demonstrating a beautifully rich and expansive lower mid-range and low end that captured nuances of my voice missed entirely by other microphones that I have sung into. My test of the AT4080 is by no means exhaustive - Audio Technica is keen to stress the many possible uses of the mic, from recording horns, drum overheads and guitar cabs through to use in broadcasting and elsewhere. However, if I was in possession of this microphone for longer than the review required (sadly, it has to go back), I would feel like it was worth the investment just to achieve that wonderfully deep and warm vocal sound. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to this microphone, not least its internal technology, but neither its pending patents nor its innovative design are as noteworthy as its performance. Listen to the AT4080 for yourself and I think you’ll agree.
