Citation : When using Rotary Encoders with absolute values (Axiom's default) to control software, it is common for a parameter in Ableton Live (or other DAW) to suddenly jump from its current position to the value of your Rotary Encoder as soon as you move the Rotary encoder. For instance, you may have mapped the Master Volume on Live to a certain Rotary Encoder. The Rotary Encoder is turned halfway up (a MIDI value of approximately 64), and your Live Master Volume is turned all the way down. As soon as you touch the Rotary Encoder, it will send its value to Live, and the Live Master Volume will jump drastically from zero to the current value of the Rotary Encoder.

To avoid this scenario, you can set your Axiom Rotary Encoders to send incremental values instead of absolute values. So instead of sending an absolute value between 0 and 127 when you move the encoder, it will send a value of +1 or -1 (or however many increments or decrements you move the encoder). Here is how to set this up with the Axiom 49 / 61.

1. Turn an Axiom Rotary Encoder to select it for editing.

2. Press the Ctrl Assign button located under the Axiom’s display window.

3. Enter 148 on the Numeric Keypad to set the Rotary Encoder to CC148.

4. Press the Data 2 button.

5. Use the numeric Keypad to enter a CC number.

Using Control Change #148 causes the Axiom's Rotary Encoder to send increment/decrement MIDI messages, rather than absolute values. If you are setting up the whole bank of Rotary encoders for Ableton Live, you may wish to set the Ctrl Assign for all Encoders to CC148. Then, set the Data 2 value to match the Rotary Encoder number. So the Data 2 value for Encoder B1 could be set for 01, and the Data 2 value for Encoder B2 could be set for 02, and so on. This is only suggested as an easy way to keep your numbering scheme easy and logical. Since Live only uses the Data 2 value for distinguishing one Rotary Encoder from another in this case, it does not really matter which value you use for Data 2, as long as you do not use the same value for two Rotary Encoders.

When you have finished setting up the Axiom, you may wish to press Store in order to save the setup as a preset within the Axiom. Once the Axiom is ready, you need to make assignments in Live.

1. Open the Live Preferences and click on the MIDI/Sync tab.

2. In the Active Devices Input area, make sure that Remote is Active for USB Axiom In1. (In Windows, it may say USB Audio Device In1). Then close the Preferences window.

3. Click the MIDI button in the upper right corner of Live to enter Edit MIDI Map Mode.

4. Click on the parameter you wish to control.

5. Turn the Rotary Encoder to be used. Live should register the MIDI channel and controller number of the Axiom Rotary Encoder next to the Live parameter to be controlled.

6. At the bottom of the Live interface, select Relative (Signed Bit 2) from the Mode drop-down menu.

7. Click the MIDI button in the upper right corner of Live to exit Edit MIDI Map Mode. Now your Rotary Encoder should control the desired param
