I just got through trying this out at the Frankfurt Musikmesse, and it is such an awesome preamp.
The cleans were so warm and expressive that people were stopping to listen by the dozens.
When I switched over to the lead mode I was in heaven. It has the most articulate lead sound I have ever heard and with the graphic EQ switched in it satisfies the need for heinous grind in all extreme metalheads. The pre was plugged straight into the VHT 2/50/2 power amp and a VHT 412 Fat Bottom cab without any effects. These things were obviously made for each other. The sound was killer, but the features were incredible. It has three channels, each with independent EQ settings, and additional DEEP and HIGH GAIN switches on the Rhythm and Lead channels. It is set up from the factory with 128 MIDI preset settings of channel/bright/boost/fat/fx loop/EQ combinations which are all user configurable and reprogrammable.
This pre is revolutionary on so many levels. The effects loop is a PRE GAIN, PRE EQ loop, made for maintaining strong and consistent levels for pedal and wah style effects which are supposed to be placed before the amp in the effect chain. Additional effects are placed between the preamp and the power amp as they should be. Special care was taken to ensure that the guitar's tone would be preserved as pristine as possible.
If I could give it more that 5 stars I would because I was able to demo the Voodoo Lab pre, the Diezel Herbert and VH4, Brunetti, Orange, Mesa, Marshall, and most of the latest boutique amps out there within the space of about 6 hours, and the VHT was by far the leader of the pack, and for the price through Music123.com you cannot go wrong.
