Schecter Hellraiser C1-FR (bridge : EMG 81)
-> ENGL SE 6L6 (chan. 3, hi gain mode, modern mode, noise gate on)
-> Two Notes Torpedo VB-101 :
-cab : Marshall 4x12 V30 Slash Signature
-mic : Neumann U87 (Condenser mic)
-miking : on-axis, closest miking possible (no distance between the grille & the mic, kinda touching it)
-post fx : low cut @ 80hz or so, exciter (slight boost) around 3Khz
-> M Audio Fast Track Pro
-> Cubase (only panning, no EQ, no effects except for the lead track that has a delay) :
http://www.esnips.com/doc/93c11024-ac56-497b-9553-55e17deacbbb/djabth
Just 2 guitars tracks, hard-panned each, same guitar but slight EQ changes on the SE between the 2.
Just plain guitars for now... i'll try those in a mix later...
By the way my playing totally sucked ass big time, don't mind the sloppiness... I hope some of you guys will recognize the songs i jammed with.

I think i might have overdone the "let's cut the low-end/low mids and focus on the good mids" thingie, hence my clips lacking some low-end/lo mids, so i brought some back with a wide 400Hz boost on post EQ.
Also i can't seem to make up my mind between the Condenser Mic and the SM57. I like the character/overall tone of the first one, but the second one seems clearer and more mix-friendly. So i tried to combine them (one on each side) to see if i can get the best of both worlds without having a tonal inbalance (i.e guitar tones too different from one side to another) as a downside.

This time i cut less Lows/Low mids in the Torpedo built in EQ than last time, i also boosted some mids/hi mids/highs & exciter (@3Hz for attack) a bit more. Finally i reduced the guitars volume a bit to fit the mix (since i boosted frequencies that make them cut through better beforehand) and let the bass & drums be heard.
I still can't seem to make up my mind between the Condenser Mic and the SM57.
My ideal tone would be clear/defined/detailed, yet "agressive/face-ripping/razor sharp", not too modern-sounding, well basically something along the lines of Pantera (face-ripping/razor sharp), Pennywise (punk-rock-ish), & Alice in chains (rock/crunch/chunk).

Compared to my previous clips (2009-12-17) i raised the bass knob a wee bit (+ 0,5) on my amp EQ and raised each of the Torpedo built-in EQ knobs a tad (+1) and the exciter value (+2%) also.
I also gave the MD421 mic a try, but i kept the same settings as with my SM57 patch. It sounds decent but i guess i need to adjust the settings to the MD421 to get a better tone.
Also in addition to the usual punk-rock-ish snippet, i posted clips of some other songs that sound more metal/HxC.

Compared to my previous clips from 2009-12-22 (the ones using the ENGL412V30 cab + Blue Dragonfly Condenser mic), the differences are the following :
* the master volume on my amp is slightly higher
* i dropped the Exciter value significantly on the torpedo, since it was adding too much junk to the tone
* no post-EQ on guitars (not even HP-LP) in Cubase this time

I think it sounds more balanced this way and my mix sounds better, you tell me (see the 2010-02-15 clips) :

Keep in mind the clip is sloppily played, and also slower/tuned lower then the original song.
See the link above for more details on the signal chain.

For the "crunchy/twangy" guitar sound on the intro and verse i just rolled back my EMG81 volume pot halfway.
For the clean sound in the middle i rolled back the EMG81 tone pot halfway (for a softer/rounder/smoother sound) and used the Clean Channel (channel 1) on my amp, along with some reverb.
Don't mind the playing, it is totally sloppy, i just wanted to do a tone test :

* raised the overall volume (it was way too quiet)
* raised the bass volume a tad, and boosted it a tad more at 105Hz
* dropped the rythm guitars a bit
* compressed the clean guitar in the middle, added some flanger to it, and dropped its volume also
http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6269
Also i remiked the rythm guitars through other cab/mic/miking setups :
- Mesa Boogie Rectifier Standard 4x12 (closed back) with V30's / Royer 121 (ribbon) : http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6271
- ENGL Pro 4x12 with Celestion V30 speakers / BeyerDynamic M160N (ribbon) : http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6273
- VHT deliverance 2x12 with Eminence P50E speakers / Royer 121 (ribbon) : http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6274

* brought the kick up a tad
* lowered the snare volume
* balanced the mix levels out
I think it sounds better (drums and overall mix are more balanced volume-wise) but still needs some improvement (further drums (incl. toms) EQ-ing, and also bass EQ-ing (maybe a tad less pick noise treble/presence should be wise), you tell me :
http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6600 (with ENGL Pro 4x12 with Celestion V30 speakers / BeyerDynamic M160N (ribbon))
Also remiked through my go-to cab/mic/miking/post-EQ setups :
http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6601 (with ENGL Pro 4x12 with Celestion V30 speakers / Shure SM57 (dynamic))
Sounds more dynamic/percussive/punchy/edgy and mix-ready/balanced than the BeyerDynamic M160N IMO, but i am not a huge fan of the kinda fizzy character and tone, especially for ringing open chords.
http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?section=id&value=6602 (with ENGL Pro 4x12 with Celestion V30 speakers / Blue Dragonfly (condenser))
This is my fav mic so far, not as good for guitar tones mix-readiness as the SM57, but still good and i like the character and tone better (sounds more like my tone, and i love the growl).
