    - What type of keyboard (synth, piano...)? How many octaves?
It's a small keyboard, narrow keys, short, with just 3 octaves. It's got dynamic touch but no aftertouch and doesn't feel that great.

    - What controlers (pitch, modulation, sustain...)?
I think you can add a pedal to this but not sure cos i lent it to a friend and he's had it for ages so i just can't remember or even check. The bastard won't give it back!

    - What connection types are there (Audio, MIDI, pedals...)?
You have 2 big jacks for audio in and the same for out, a minijack for mic in, midi in & out & maybe a thru but i doubt it, and i think there is a pedal jack.

    - How many sounds, effects? What styles? Can they be edited?
Quite a variety of sounds, and they can be metamorphosed with just a knob so you can obtain loooaaads of different sounds with this thing, it really is amazing. You'll have a hard time getting anything that sounds real out of it, such as piano or guitar, but i'm not sure that's the point anyway.
You have 5 real time knobs but this does not cover all the edition parameters...you have to fiddle with other settings too if you want to explore the whole depth of the machine. I haven't tried that yet, but maybe i should.
They should have had 10 knobs and made everything directly accessible. Also a proper LCD screen would be good.

    - through a Mac/PC utility program?
    Nah, don't think so.

    - What's the polyphony?...
Ooh, not much: 4 i think. 8 or 16 would have been nice. ;-)

    UTILIZATION

    - Is the general configuration/setup simple?
Switch it on, press a bank button and you're already having fun. This machine sounds great.

    - Is the sound or effects editing easy?
Never tried proper editing, only know fiddling, and that's dead easy of course...

    - Is the manual clear and sufficient?...
    Not sure i have one.

    SOUNDS

    - Do the sounds suit your style of music?
Most people complain that the sounds on this apply to too few styles. Well, the machine was surely aimed at a certain market. But you can use it on pop and i'm sure you could use it on loads of stuff with a little imagination and maybe an external effects rack.

    - Are they realistic?
    No.

    - What do you think about the effects?
The beast sounds great to me.

    - Is the expressiveness acceptable? (touch sensitivity, aftertouch)?
No aftertouch on this as far as i know. Keyboard works but a nicer touch and bigger keys would have been nice. It's ok for silly little riffs, though. And i guess if you have an M-Audio Axiom then you could use that to control the Korg...

    - What sounds do you like or hate?
Those you don't like you can fiddle with or ignore so...

    OVERALL OPINION

    - For how long have you been using it?
Had it a few months, but my mate has had it longer than i have now...he can't seem to live without it.

    - What thing do you like most/least about it?
The sound is unique, MUCH better than plug-ins...and no latency.
Haven't tried the audio in jacks yet but using this to filter other sources does sound very appealing.
    It's small and easily carriable.
But the keyboard is a bit small and the polyphony is a little short too.

    - Did you try many other models before getting this one?
Nope. I got it at a bargain price, used: went for it.

    - What is your opinion about the value for the price?
The new price on this hasn't budged for ages, proving that demand is still high. I think the price should be lower by now, but the used price is a real bargain.

    - Knowing what you know now, would you make the same choice?...
    Yes, definitely.
But also check out the other mini / micro keyboards, some of them sound amazing too.

Great vocoder with the formant hold feature. Polyphony is lacking with only 4 and 2 if you use 4 oscillators (2 timbres). The keyboard is small bue it think it has a nice playing to it feel with nice pitch and mod wheels. I dont like the fact that we have to erase presets to save our own but the software editor sorted that out. But overall, for what must be the cheapest new synth available, it's a super bargain.

    Price paid: 350 euros

    UTILIZATION

I think it's the low point of this machine. With 2 wheels to choose the parametrs, 5 to change them and only a 3 digit screen you have to spend a lot of time with the manual to really get the best out of it cause it can be confusing at first. After that rough start i think you can pretty much "surf" trough your creations.

    SOUNDS

Really great sounds. You can really get major (and i mean MAJOR) stuff from this thing.

    OVERALL OPINION

Have it for a year and a half. Always moving it, already used it with batteries and it still works like the first day. Great

Great little machine. Even if i won't use it more in the future because of other buys i won't sell it because i will always have a memory of it as my first little synth :D Actually i still use it as a midi keyboard cause i like it's small size and portability.

Needs an extra oscillator, but probably be improvised by using the timbres. Other than that, it's fine.

    Price paid

    £244 (€350)

    UTILIZATION

A bit tedious to edit at times, but the time taken up is worth it. Within an hour I had some pretty rich phat sounds going. Loads of people complain about it's mini-keys, but for me they actually suit me since i've got tiny hands (it's true) Because of tis I can play twice as fast as my MIDI keyboard with full-sized keys.

    SOUNDS

Real phat sounds from this little guy. Well it is basically using the same sound engine as the mighty MS2000...

    OVERALL OPINION

Looks pretty solid and even though most of it is made of plastic, it actually quite fooled me for it to be made of metal.

I love this little beast, so much that I canceled my order for my MS2000B before I got this.

    I. 8 band vocoder - nice!! ii. mini keys - which needs some getting used to iii. included (pc?!??)condenser mic - which i don't use - so i use my own mic instead iv. the usual pitch bend and mod wheels v. the sometimes useful octave shift buttons since it has only 37 keys vi. rather sturdy knobs - i've abused it quite well at gigs and jamming sessions. and trust me, i go crazy. vii. ac or battery powered - what a blippin excellent idea??! i've been to gigs where power connectivity issues come up only to be saved by the fact that it can run on batteries. a fresh set of alkaline batts can definitely go for a full hour and a half - havent tried going for longer. viii. the size - you either love it or loathe it. i play other instruments live as well, so setting up another 25kg gear isnt really preffered when you dont have a roadie-guy who carries and takes care of your stuff when you're drunk after (and before??!) gigs.

    Price paid

    AUD$899

    UTILIZATION

No obvious issues here. once you get a hold of how everything works/tweaks from the manual or trial&error if you're that type, then you'll realise that this baby is a breeze to use.

i've had it for 6 months now, the usual avex thumpings and tweakings have been applied, been on and off many car boots and stage floors, loads of gig masking tapes have grazed on and off it and it still feels and look as new. everything you'd expect from a korg, pretty much.

    SOUNDS

Sound quality is excellent considering it is the micro (no pun intended) version of the ms2000b. the sound presets are even 'categorised' in genres - ignore the korg marketing effort here, but nonetheless it has almost everything you could tweak from that 'korg' sound. if you're lucky you could even find presets from the ms2000b online somewhere, all pretty, nice and ready to be dumped into the microKorg.

    OVERALL OPINION

Definitely love at first sight, this one. saw somebody demo'd it at the local, and had it ever since. to me, its the kinda gear that rarely gets useless in your studio or live - not so much a necessity but rather a rockin extension to your other gears and sounds.

This unit is jam packed with features (concidering the size) theres all teh effects you would need, great filters and loads of good presets to get stuck into. The keys are a nightmare but plugging an external midi keyboard into it does the trick!

    Price paid

    £235.99

    UTILIZATION

The editability is a little frustrating at times as the main editing controls are split up over two control nobs and the editing list is hard to read in a dark studio. Though it is a small unit so something has to give!!!!

I've had this unit for 7 months and i take it out of the studio some times and it seems fine, dont fancy dropping it though!

    SOUNDS

The bass sounds are amoung the fattest around (dont think to much of the preset ones though) and as for the lead!! well for a bit of tech house its amazing!!!!

    OVERALL OPINION

All in all its a great machine, I love the vocoder. It would be a full 10 if it had a little more ease. Good though.

I would have liked to see more oscillators available, but for the price paid it seems to fit for everything you recieve.I also would have liked to see bigger keys.

    UTILIZATION

This synth was fairly easy to use. This was a bit of an upgrade to me as I was coming up from a Korg EA-1,so learning how to get around on the matrix of the microKorg took a few minutes.

    SOUNDS

The sound quality is pretty solid.Hook this little synth up to a big system and hear it roar.

    OVERALL OPINION

I have had this synth for about 3 years now and have never had to get it repaired. The body of the synth is fairly durable.

Although the Alesis micron is out now and heavily competes and in some cases people would say blows this little synth away.I still remember that this was out 3 years ago and is still perfect for me today with my budget.

Micro Korg, with 3 octaves. Has modulation and pitch control. Also resonance, cutoff, sustain, and tempo controls for synth settings. MIDI and 1/4" out connection. Vocoder accessible. 1/8" microphone input. I have played live with this synth and plugged directly into my Mac to record with excellent results. Largest variety of sounds of any synth you will find.

    UTILIZATION

Easy setup, even has MIDI controls. 1/4'' or guitar cord input to easily play through any amp or pa system. Editing the effects is fairly simple. There are already thousands of preprogrammed synth settings. There is a genre selection knob which goes between dance, hip-hop, electronic, house, and 4 other selections to choose from. Once you pick a sound you like you can begin to edit the modulation and pitch from two large controls on the left side of the synth or edit the resonance, cutoff, or sustain with 5 small knobs running across the top right. There is a large manual which I encourage reading because this synth has so many editing effects.

    SOUNDS

Perfectly. I use the vocoder and arrpegiator all the time. You can edit the setting on any programmed synth and customize the sound to fit your need. I love the wildcat sounds and airplane noises. There are seriously too many synths programmed on this synth to ever need.

    OVERALL OPINION

I have been using this synth for 3 years now and I enjoy the simplicity of it. So many different synth modes you are sure to find any sound you will want. My only complaint is that it has small keys and with my hands I will often hit multiple keys at once. This is the only synth I have owned but have used others and the microkorg is the best. I bought mine used for 200. good price for this synth. They are easy to find used, not necessary to buy a new unit.

This is a digital synth that has three octaves. There are connections for a microphone (input) as well as a 1/4" output for amplifiers and PAs. There's also an XLR out. The Microkorg has a built-in vocoder which is the reason for the microphone. There are wheels to adjust pitch, modulation, and sustain. It can be used for monophonic or polyphonic purposes. The sounds on this machine are finite, meaning you cannot update them with a computer.

    UTILIZATION

Using this machine is pretty simple overall. While there are a bunch of sounds, there isn't an astronomical number of them, meaning you can get around them pretty easily and program your favorite ones for easy access. THe hardest thing about using this keyboard is the size of the keys. These keys would be relatively small for any player who isn't a child, and my hands happen to be quite large, so I sometimes struggle to fit the notes in. However, I think this is a relatively small problem considering that my main use of this synth is for single note lines, though. The manual is really good at explaining how to work the synth, and it definitely made things easier once I got started.

    SOUNDS

I love the sounds that come out of this synth. Don't let the size fool you; this guy really brings it! My favorite sounds are ones that can best be described as throwbacks to 80s new wave and 90s dance music. I think that if this is what you are looking for, these sounds are great. It also does a decent job of emulating mellotron and organ sounds, which I wasn't expecting. I wouldn't buy it specifically for those things, but they are a nice bonus. To top it all off, the Vocoder is undoubtedly one of the best features of this synth, and almost worth it for this alone.
The sounds are only as realistic as a synth can be. It emulates synth sounds, not the sounds of real instruments, so I'd say they are overall pretty realistic. There isn't much in the way of touch sensitivity, but the sounds that come out of this guy aren't really the kind you'd need a whole lot of sensitivity on anyway. I like some of the effects, particularly the modulation and reverb effects. I haven't had a single complaint with any of the sounds that have come out of this synth.

    OVERALL OPINION

This synth came highly recommended by a few friends of mine. They didn't steer me wrong. I am very happy with this purchase. I like the diversity of synth sounds, the vocoder, and the relatively compact size of this keyboard. It's a bit pricey but I am very much convinced that it's worth it. I think that the sound quality is solid throughout, and assuming you use the right amp or DI this thing can work wonders. If broken, I would certainly replace it.

The Korg MicroKorg is a three octave synth with a huge variety of uses. It has pitch and modulation wheels, as well as a built in vocoder and a 1/4 inch output to send the signal to your amp. The synth has all different types of lead synth sounds, pads, and just about every synth sound under the sun. It can be monophonic or polyphonic and also has a 1/4 inch output for a sustain pedal.

    UTILIZATION

Using the Korg MicroKorg definitely takes a bit of practice and getting used to as it has so many different types of sounds and an incredible amount of parameters to control these sounds. You can use their presets, alter them, or create your own. The manual for this is complete and clear and is worth having around when you are learning this synth, as you never know when you might need it.

The Korg MicroKorg has enough different synth sounds to cover just about any genre, but I use it mostly for pop music. The synth sounds are realistic and extremely varied. The vocoder is awesome and almost worth the price of this alone. I also love the arpeggiator as it makes for some truly awesome sounds. The touch of the keys is accurate, but I really wish that it had full keys, as it can be hard to play with such small keys. Since it has such small keys, it is really suited best for playing single hand lead synth lines.

    OVERALL OPINION

I've been using the Korg MicroKorg for about three years and I have found it to be a great overall synthesizer for getting really synth like sounds. The price is reasonable for such a versatile unit, and it has become quite a popular synth as I've seen it used all over the place. Its great in the studio, or in a live setting as it has a wide variety of sounds and effects. If the keys were normal size, this synth would be a knockout, but the small keys can make it somewhat hard to play if you are not used to it. The MicroKorg is worth a look for any keyboard player looking for a cheap way to get great synth sounds.
