"Second only to my Model D, it's my favorite synth (maybe a tie really). They compliment each other well. True, it is much brighter but that filter is amazing and if you mellow it out with some warmth coming in via a nice transformer based preamp and some compression, it really sits nicely in the mix. I have so many old blobby/round sounding analogs this was a nice refreshing sound for me. I never liked the Minibrute, Prophet 6, Analog Four, new school moogs or any of the modern crop of analog synths, but this one is special.
I ended up starting over on a lot of songs once I got it just because it was so inspiring. It will end up being the most used synth on this record I think. At this point my all time list starts with the Minimoog, Minilogue, Monopoly, Prophet 5, and Virus C.
... I use a lot of different preamps to get different effects. I think it's really important to have a solid analog front end before your converters. software can do a lot but there are limits and when digital gets pushed to its limits things can start to sound bad quickly.
My favorite preamps are the Chandler LTD-1 (no compressor) and the Neve Portico II Channel, two similar takes on the same idea. For tube stuff I use the UA 6176. A more cost effective solution is the Chameleon Labs 7602 which I used to record most of Dive. There are of course less expensive options and none are necessarily better or worse, just a matter of what you need out of it in terms of sound and performance. I'd just recommend trying out as many as you can and finding the sound that works for you."
