Alan Wilder: “We were always aware that three blokes stuck primarily behind keyboards would never really make for a dynamic show, and, to this day, much of the performance rests upon Dave’s shoulders. Even in the early days, with a very simple line — up of keyboards and tape machine (which used to sit in the middle of the stage), we tried to incorporate background changes and unusual lighting. Inevitably, the production became more elaborate as the venue sizes increased and it was obvious that we needed to supplement the show with extra interest to really come across — hence the more elaborate stage sets and, later, the film shows. The films enhanced the production to such an extent that it was impossible to remove the use of them once established. By the time of the World Violation Tour we were taking 11 articulated lorries and a crew close to 100.”
While some earlier Depeche Mode tours featured recycled backing tracks, they were reworked from scratch for the World Violation Tour — for example, ‘Behind The Wheel’ segued into ‘Route 66’ in what Alan Wilder jokingly termed “true cabaret style”. “The World Violation Tour [16-track backing] tapes were prepared at Worldwide International — Mute’s studio — mainly by myself, with [violator engineer] Steve Lyon,” Wilder explained.
Thereafter, the band, their road crew (including a wardrobe person for each band member), and a vast stage set — designed by newly appointed ‘visual director’ Anton Corbijn (featuring, for the first time, video screens to project the Dutchman’s films) — was shipped out to sunny Florida to begin rehearsals.

Cynique? Meuh noooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnn................
Alan Wilder: “‘People Are People’ was the first track to benefit from a period of Pre-programming to save studio time — even if it was done in a dodgy rehearsal room in Dollis Hill, North London. We would have finished it sooner except that some of the work had to be redone after the ‘infamous incident’ when a particular member of the band turned up, only to trip over the main power cable and pull the plug.”
Wilder would not be drawn into naming names, but given that one of Martin Gore’s favourite studio pastimes at that time involved hiding hapless Andy Fletcher’s spectacles, perhaps the short-sighted synth player was the guilty party. “It’s not always a bad thing — especially in Germany where we get some right nutters headbanging in front of the stage, but if friends come to see us and they’re waving like mad, I never see them so they think I’m ignoring them.”

Hors sujet :Il y avait ce tribute album sorti en 1998, For the Masses.
